Participating in sports is good for physical health. But take a look at other specific ways it can benefit a girl’s health as she is participating.

Fewer chronic illnesses

Girls who play sports have stronger immune systems and a reduced risk of chronic illnesses. [46]

Higher body esteem

There is a positive relationship between athletics and body esteem among girls. Girls who play sports are also 16% less likely to want to change their image. [47]

Reduced risk of obesity

Girls who play sports are less obsese than non-athletes. [48]

Healthier menstruation

Girls who play sports have lighter and more regular periods. They also tend to experience less cramping and discomfort. [49]

Stronger bones

Girls who participate in sports have stronger bones and a reduced risk of osteoporosis. [50] As written in the Guardian, studies “have found that bones retain a ‘memory’ of early-life exercise before the onset of puberty that lasts long after the exercise has ceased and provides health benefits even in a relatively sedentary adulthood.” [51]

Reduced cigarette and illicit drug use

National studies found that girls who play sports are 92% less likely to use drugs. [52]
